Urgent appeal to save the dolphin in the Ionian

The immediate management measures of fisheries to protect one of the last populations of common dolphins in the Mediterranean in a Nature 2000 site of the Ionian islands internal request by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the Ministry of Environment, 10 international and 3 Greek research and environmental NGOs. According to scientific evidence, overfishing - primarily from seiners - has caused the destruction of the marine ecosystem and the dramatic reduction in the number of common dolphins from 150 to 15 within only ten years.

Organizations Alnitak Marine Research Centre, Blue World, Cetacean Alliance, CIRCE, Delphis, MOm, Morigenos, Oceana, OceanCare, Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute, Tethys Research Institute, Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and WWF Hellas invite the two relevant ministries to take action for fisheries management in Nature located east of Lefkada and around the island of Kalamos. Immediate action is necessary because protection of the marine ecosystem, biodiversity and fish stocks is essential
The data show that the shrinking population of common dolphin, and tuna mainly caused by the depletion of their food because of overfishing. The common dolphin is one of the 4 species of dolphins that live in our country and the population of a Nature internal islands of the Ionian Sea is one of the last populations of the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean common dolphin population has shrunk dramatically in recent years and is considered endangered.
